The district was honored by the State Government with award of Rs. 3 Lacs in 1964 in recognition of its fruitful performance in the Small Saving Scheme of Gujarat State Government. Education was a far cry of the toiling illiterate lot in the district. The leading enlightened educationists took a wise decision to invest this amount to start higher education institute in the district. Thus the Arts College began in 1964 and science college in 1965 on the rented premises. Commerce faculty was added in 1979.

The influx of the students however was too great in number to accommodate. In 1983 the construction of the new building began. In 1986 Arts and Commerce faculties were shifted to the new building. After raising the laboratory and other facilities the Science faculty too was shifted to new building from the rented premises. In its initial stages, District Panchayat, Taluka Panchayat and Municipality donated funds.The Diamond rich Palanpuri Jain families came forward with huge donations.Thus the funds ware raised to realize the dreams of the youngster for higher education.Palanpur city of orchard was turning into a city of learning.
